Safer, Walkable Streets for Jersey City
Our children’s safety comes first, and everyone deserves safer, more walkable streets in Jersey City. This plan focuses on practical, proven steps to protect pedestrians, improve traffic flow, and foster a culture of shared responsibility on our roads.
Protecting Pedestrians
Yield to Pedestrians – Turning vehicles must always stop for people in the crosswalk, without exception.
Raised Crosswalks – Installed in school zones and near recreational parks to slow traffic and increase visibility.
Pushed-Back Stop Lines – Set at least one car length from crosswalks to give pedestrians more space and improve driver sightlines.
Zero Tolerance in School and Park Zones
15 MPH Speed Limit in designated areas.
Safe Drop-Offs Only – Prohibited in crosswalks or mid-street.
No Commercial Vehicles blocking pedestrian walkways.
No Right Turn on Red – Citywide
Eliminating right turns on red to reduce crashes and improve intersection safety.
Education and Prevention
Promote “Eyes Up, Phones Down” for both drivers and pedestrians.
Discourage mid-block crossings through targeted enforcement and awareness campaigns.
Partner with the Jersey City Police Department and local schools to teach safe travel habits.
Enforce the “No Touch” law to ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
Clear Signage
Place “Children at Play,” “Slow Down,” and “School Zone” signage where they are most needed to remind drivers of their responsibilities.
Bicycle and Micromobility Safety
Require helmets, bells, mirrors, and reflective vests for all riders.
Ensure e-bikes and mopeds follow all traffic laws.
Require a valid driver’s license for vehicles capable of exceeding 20 mph.
Permanent Curb Bump-Outs
Install large planters and benches at corners to slow vehicle turns, prevent illegal corner parking, and beautify neighborhoods.
Our Community Safety Commitment
We all share the road, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure it is safe for everyone. By combining infrastructure improvements, education, and consistent enforcement, we can create a safer Jersey City for children, families, and all who call our city home.
